I am a crochet kinda gal. My Nana taught me how to crochet and although I was terrible at it and got frustrated when I first started, I love it now. It takes practice just like anything else!
I've tried to teach myself how to knit... but I didn't enjoy it as much. But I'd love to learn the right way someday. For now I will just enjoy the art of crochet.
This may sound silly... but the primarily way I teach myself how to crochet is by youtube videos. I can read patterns but I am an artist.. I need visuals!
I found this one lady online and although most of her patterns aren't very modern.. she does visually do a good job of showing you techniques. And then I LOVE to take these and make up my own patterns.
Here is two of her videos on YouTube.. I've made both hats and they are really easy once you have basic crochet skills:
I also have this book called Happy Hooker (Clever right?!) The author also wrote Stitch & Bitch which is a book about knitting. The patterns are cute and fun and has written and illustrated step by step guide to learning how to crochet!:
